The US Dollar Index (USDX) serves as a gauge for the United States dollar, as compared with selected foreign currencies, mainly consisting compilation of currencies from US trade partners. This basket includes the Euro (representing 57.6% of the total), Japanese Yen (13.6%), British Pound (11.9%), Canadian Dollar (9.1%), Swedish Krona (4.2%), and Swiss Franc (3.6%). This index was initiated in 1973, with an initial value of 100, and subsequent readings are measured relative to this foundation.
The Dollar Index is commonly employed for risk hedging within currency markets or for establishing a US Dollar position without assuming the risk associated with an individual currency pair. USDX goes up when the US dollar gains "strength" (value) when compared to other currencies.
